PRESS RELEASE - DEC 2000

Gawain and the Green Knight

Wycombe's own Professional Theatre Company, Wildcard, returns to the Wycombe Swan Town Hall Theatre from 4th - 13th January 2001 with their latest production: `Gawain and the Green Knight'.

Once again, Artistic Director Andrew Potter turns his attention to the rythmns of an epic poem, adapting the play from the 14th Century text which tells the famous story of the Arthurian legend. Also on the creative team are local poet and writer, Eric Alexander, who has been commissioned by Wildcard to write a Prologue and Epilogue for the play, and local design student Stephanie Lennon, who has designed the set, which includes giant three-dimensional tarot cards suspended above the audience like a sword of Damocles.

Director Andrew Potter says of the play "It is a wonderfully weird tale; a peculiarly potent blend of the pagan and the pious, the earthly and the eerie... with an amazing amount of alliteration along the way. Gawain himself is a walker between worlds - a hero with one foot firmly planted in the Christian ideals of Camelot, and the other well and truly treading in something older and darker: a fool who rushes in where angels fear, and somehow emerges with a genuine claim on our admiration despite, or rather because of his very human failings. And, as such, he seems a 'perfect' hero for our own high-reaching, clod-footed times."

This is a glorious and fun-filled celebration of chivalry and honour in true WTC style. Andrew Potter directs and stars in Wildcard's latest offering to banish those post-Christmas blues. Also in the cast are local actor and WTC regular, David Farey, and newcomers Neil Howman, Jane Darby, whose beautiful operatic voice soars above the text, and musician Dave Price. The original music for the production has been written by Tara Hendry, who also composed the music for WTC's production of HIAWATHA last year. The production is presented banquet-style, with an optional meal before the performance. Details of the menu are available from the Box Office, but the meal must be booked in advance.

Tickets are available to the general public from the Wycombe Swan Box Office on 01494 512000 and are priced at 10.00 (8.00 concessions). The meal costs an additional 10.00.
