A play as nature intended it

In The Beginning ...
High Wycombe Town Hall

Written by Andrew Potter, who was also artistic director, and taken from a variety of medieval mystery plays, this very funny and slightly irreverant adaptation of the book of Genesis was presented by Wildcard Theatre Company.

Fidel Nanton gave a brilliant and very funny performance as a dancing, blues-singing God with Gillian MacGregor playing a very seductive Lucifer.

Matt Hebden and Peri Thomas as Adam and Eve respectively, performing as

nature intended, were very convincing in their roles. As well as being hilarious, there were moments of pathos, especially when God banished Adam and Eve from Eden.

With the four actors playing various roles, including God's call to Abraham to sacrifice his son - another very touching scene - the action galloped along. The scene with Noah and his family was very cleverly portrayed and the two pigs going into the Ark was a masterstroke, also

the trembling lamb awaiting sacrifice. The use of small, stuffed rabbits by the score to depict all the "begats" in the book was a touch of genius.

Delightful lyrics and music by Tara Hendry and impressive choreography from Elizabeth Blake made this another masterpiece by the extremely talented Andrew Potter. I could have sat through it all again with pleasure.
