PRESS RELEASE 18/4/01

Wildcard Theatre Company presents: Terry Johnson's 'Insignificance'.

'Insignificance', Terry Johnson's classic play in which Albert Einstein, Marilyn Monroe, Joe DiMaggio and Senator McCarthy collide in a New York hotel room in 1953, is rarely seen in its original version. In 1985 it was turned into a screenplay for the film directed by Nicholas Roeg, and in 1995, Terry Johnson revised the script again for the Donmar Warehouse. Wildcard is delighted that Terry Johnson has given very rare permission for them to produce the original, unrevised script.

Artistic Director, Andrew Potter, comments: "I wanted to produce the earlier, published version which, to my mind, exhibits an archetypal charm not unrelated to the Mystery Plays and Moral Interludes that form the basis of this country's theatrical heritage. I am very grateful to Terry Johnson for allowing Wildcard to present the play in this form."

Insignificance held its world premire at the Royal Court Theatre in 1982 and was voted one of the top one hundred plays in the NT2000 Platform series. It also won for its creator, Terry Johnson, the Evening Standard Theatre Award for 1982: Most Promising Playwright

.

This production features:

Chris Myles as The Professor. Wycombe-born Chris Myles has appeared for WTC many times in Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and is particularly remembered for his brilliant interpretation of Mephistopheles in Dr. Faustus.

Danile Sanderson as The Actress. Danile returns to WTC to follow her stunning portrayal of Jessica in The Merchant of Venice.

Fidel Nanton as The Ballplayer. Fidel appeared previously for WTC in Hamlet and as Porthos in The Three Musketeers.
