Introduction to Directing

with Emily Aboud

Directing is a difficult job to describe. There are lots of components. How do you begin a new writing piece? How do you run a rehearsal room? A warm up? What is the best way to dissect the text? Working with the space? Integrating sound, lights and movement? Taking a script and making it 3D is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job but how does one begin?

In three sessions we’re going to go through the basics of directing. This includes how to run a rehearsal room in a collaborative and conflict-confident way, working with writers, and the science of stagecraft. You will learn the basic methods of running a rehearsal process and how that would differ with a new piece of writing vs a revival of an older text.

This course will be taught through a decolonising lens. Theatre and directing are far too often seen as a straight, white man’s game.

This is the second time Emily is bringing this course to us after a successful run in 2021 and we are delighted to have her back.
