Description

Pantomime Bootcamp

with Anna Spearpoint & Louise Beresford

Did somebody say a 4 week bootcamp course, learning how to perform and create comedy pantomime perfection? OH, YES THEY DID.

When:

4 weeks

Tuesdays

Tuesday 16th November | Tuesday 23rd November | Tuesday 30th November | Tuesday 7th December

Time: 2.30-5.30pm

Where: Wildcard Studios, 18 Balderton Street, W1K 6TG

For the past 3 years we, Anna Spearpoint and Louise Beresford, have pantomimed together at Theatre503 and now we want to share our tools and treats with you. In this 4 week course we will be focussing on…

PERFORMING PANTOMIME: interpreting pantomime characters, working with comedy text, putting a twist on a familiar character, audience interaction, and literally how to survive the stamina marathon that is a panto schedule.
CREATING CHARACTERS AND STORY: Pantomime starts with character. We’ll be popping our dramaturgical hats on and walking through our process of unpicking and reimagining classic fairytale characters before learning the fundamentals of pantomime story structure.
WRITING STORY AND SONGS: Now we’ve planned the story, let’s write the story! And songs. Lots of songs. Lots of silly scenes and songs. We’ll look at the ‘tropes’ of pantomime and how to use them to your advantage.

SHARING: By week 4, you will all have written a scene and/or song. In this session, we’ll put all the work together to perform our own mini-pantomimes, testing our new tool kits.

Who is this for?
Actors, writers, theatre-makers, comedy folk… anyone!

We’re looking forward to having a range of experiences in the room. All we ask is that you have an interest in pantomime.

Why do it? WHY?
We think pantomime is massively important. It’s the first introduction to theatre for most, so we think it deserves respect, creativity and inclusivity. Even if you never interact with pantomime again, this course will teach you how to jump into the deep end as a performer and teach you some fundamental comedic and dramaturgical skills that can be taken to any future project.

About Anna & Louise:

Anna and Louise met whilst gazing into each other’s funny bones in the cast of Theatre503’s ‘Cinderella and The Beanstalk’, 2018. In 2019, they were commissioned to write a new pantomime for Theatre503 and ‘The Fairytale Revolution’ was born. This was given **** by the stage and recommissioned for 2020. Our 2020 show was reimagined for livestream, directed by Emily Aboud. It won an OnComm award and was featured in the New York Times. Our shows take traditional fairytale characters and give them a new lease of life for modern audiences.

Anna is an award-winning performer and writer who has had plays developed with Arcola Theatre, Box of Tricks Theatre Company and Paines Plough. Her play ‘Omelette’ won the Playwrought scheme at Arcola and was nominated for an Origins Award for Outstanding New Work at VAULT Festival. She is an associate artist of the National Youth Theatre.

Louise is an actor and writer who trained at Mountview Academy. She has worked with Soho Theatre, Young Vic, Channel 4 and the BBC. Louise writes and performs as part of sketch trio Lead Pencil, with whom she has developed three sell-out Edinburgh shows at the Underbelly and appeared on BBC Radio 4, Comedy Central and Funny Or Die.
