Do you find it difficult to connect with Shakespearean texts? Maybe you find yourself dropping thoughts and being unable to power through to the end of the line? Or perhaps you just love Shakespeare and want to delve into his world for a day?
Well, come and join the BAFTA winning Rakie Ayola as she works with you to break down barriers between you and the text, flex your linguistic muscles, and find the most YOU in the character you’ve chosen.

This workshop will be a fun-filled in-person group workshop, where you will get the chance to perform a speech of your choice and then work on it with Rakie and the rest of the group. You will be given exercises to get you out of habits, be challenged by Rakie and pushed to your limits so that you will leave feeling more inspired and connected to your character than ever before.
This workshop is for all levels of experience, and will particularly connect with you if:
- You love Shakespeare & want to learn more
- You hate Shakespeare but want to love it
- You are auditioning for drama schools/a Shakespeare play
- You find yourself getting stuck in old habits/routines when doing Shakespeare
To prepare:
Please prepare a speech of your choice from any of Shakespeare’s plays. It is great if you can learn it but not essential. As long as you know a few lines of it that we can play with and work on that will be enough.
About Rakie:
Actor and producer Rakie Ayola recently received the 2021 Best Supporting Actress BAFTA Award for her portrayal of Gee Walker in the BBC TV drama ‘Anthony’. In 2020 she won Best Female Performance in a Play at the Black British Theatre Awards, for the NTWales/ Royal Court production ‘On Bear Ridge’. Rakie is co-founder of Shanty Productions and is Exec-Producer of their film ‘Twelfth Night’ for which she was nominated for the Screen Nation - Independent Spirit of Production Award.
During a career spanning over 30 years, Rakie has worked prolifically on stage, TV, radio and film. Her recent work includes ‘The Pact’ -BBC1, ‘Grace’ - ITV1, The Half God of Rainfall’ -Kiln Theatre (BBTA 2019 nomination), ‘No Offence’ -Channel 4, Hermione Granger in ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ - West End and ‘King Lear’ -Royal Exchange/ Birmingham Rep / BBC4. She will next be seen in ‘Alex Rider’ -Amazon Prime Video.
Rakie grew up in Ely in Cardiff and is a Fellow and alumna of RWCMD. In 2019 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Warwick University. She is an Ambassador for campaign group Parents In Performing Arts, a Patron of The Childhood Tumour Trust and a Trustee of The Actors’ Children’s Trust.”
